Jefferson Lab
Project Location: Newport News, Va.
Project Type: Electrical installations and ongoing repair and maintenance
The Jefferson Lab Challenge
Electrical requirements at the Jefferson Lab are quite varied, often times needing a careful balance between precision, quality and quick response. In addition to accommodating work schedules and constantly changing scope and priorities, the team at Jefferson Lab needed a partner to work hand-in-hand with them to improve and maintain facility safety.
The Harris Power Electrical Solution
Our team arrived early and stayed late to support JLab's work schedule and their impact to operations. In a total contract that exceeded $4.7 million since 2002, Harris Power Electrical has performed key installations and repairs, including:
- Installation of the electrical distribution system in the Central Materials Storage Area, providing power to six buildings, a new fuel filling station and a new underground distribution system.
- Emergency generator installation and electrical repairs during the holidays in late December 2010 for damaged power distribution equipment.
- Replacing high-voltage fuse holders in the 1500 kilovolt (kVA) substations across the laboratory, greatly increasing system reliability and enabling continued accelerator operation.
- Repair and modification of the Hall C, 2,000 kVA transformer, including an external switchboard, allowing the Q-weak experiment to run without interruption.
- Temporary power installations to reroute the underground electrical distribution system in support of the TEDF construction project - a weekend-long project that ensured campus buildings were ready for work on Monday morning.
The Results
Last year, Harris Power Electrical completed 648 work orders, inspected more than 400 electrical panels and performed preventative maintenance on all of the laboratory's generators. As a result, we were selected from more than 117 contractors as the "Outstanding Small Business Subcontractor of the Year" in Virginia for 2010 - an annual award provided to a small business that contributes greatly to the ongoing success of the Department of Energy and Jefferson Lab.
